There are plenty of people out there who enjoy a little retail therapy when they’re down or just bored, and while shopping can certainly be fun, it seems there are plenty of people out there who actually feel guilty spending money.

A new survey finds that 51% of Americans admit to feeling a bit of guilt when they spend money, with those folks saying they feel guilt spending $89 a week, or $277,680 in their adult lifetime.

So, why is everyone so guilty? Well, for most people the guilt comes when they find the item they purchased for a better price, while many also feel guilty because they believe they could have used their money better.

As for what purchases are causing all this guilt, it seems folks feel guiltiest about spending money going out to eat (47%), followed by purchasing clothes (46%). Other things people feel guilty spending money on include:

Electronics (TV, phone, etc.) (38%)

Shoes (35%)

Take out (35%)

Alcoholic drinks (34%)

Cosmetics/beauty items (31%)

Snacks (30%)

Vacation and travel (24%)

My passions (24%)
