Abortions after about 6 weeks will now be illegal in Georgia

Georgia's controversial heartbeat abortion bill is now law. Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed the LIFE Act into law yesterday. It makes most abortions illegal once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually around six weeks into a pregnancy.

The bill does make an exception for rape and incest, allowing abortion up to 20 weeks. Some outspoken film and TV stars have threatened to cancel productions in the state if the bill became law.

Beyond that, opponents are ready to head to court – and if it’s not blocked, the new law will take effect January 1st.
