MA Teacher Arrested After Placing Bullet In School Stairwell

A Massachusetts school teacher was trying to make a statement about school safety and it backfired.

Biology teacher Alfred Purcell told police left a bullet in the stairwell of Southbridge High Thursday to "prove the school needed metal detectors." Purcell called police to say he discovered a live round of ammunition in the stairwell shortly after 8am. The school was immediately placed on lockdown for about an hour.

What he didn’t think of was cameras. The school's security footage showed Purcell taking the bullet from his pocket and dropping it on the floor.

The 57-year-old teacher was charged with two counts of carrying ammunition on school grounds. A search of Purcell’s vehicle yielded 102 live rounds of .20 gauge shot gun ammunition in the trunk. It was later confirmed that Purcell’s license to carry a firearm was expired in Connecticut.
