Russian 'bear' bombers intercepted near Alaska for second time in two days

NORAD has confirmed that American F-22 stealth jets intercepted six Russian military aircraft off the coast of Alaska Monday. Taking to Twitter(yes they have an account)the North American Aerospace Defense Command, says the U.S. fighters spotted the four bombers and two fighter jets inside of the Air Defense Identification Zone, which is about 200 miles from Alaska's western coast.

“Our ability to deter and defeat threats to our citizens and vital infrastructure starts with detecting, tracking, and positively identifying aircraft our airspace,” NORAD offered in a tweet attributed to Gen.Terrence O'Shaughnessy. “We are on alert 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.”

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the incident, saying the F-22s escorted their planes for several hours – and dismissed the actions as “regular.” NORAD reports the Russian planes remained in international airspace the entire time.
