An 11-year-old girl in Michigan who got dressed for a physically active last day of school was surprised to be called out for a dress code violation.Liv Morgan says her stepdaughter Aubrie was dress coded for wearing leggings, which allegedly accented her backside. The sixth-grader was wearing a T-shirt and a pair of thick gray leggings, but she says Bryant Middle School in Dearborn didn’t approve and told her and two other female students to cover up or fix their outfits.

When Morgan saw her daughter after school, she was wearing an oversized, bright yellow T-shirt the school provided as a solution to cover her bottom. She called the school and talked to the assistant principal, who allegedly said Aubrie’s top didn’t adequately cover her bottom. The stepmom told them, “My concern is that you interrupted Aubrie’s learning because you thought her body would interrupt someone else’s.” She feels when they called out Aubrie, they “put a target on her back for gossip and they sexualized her.”

According to Dearborn Public Schools’student handbook, clothing that presents a “hazard” to students or interferes with school work isn’t allowed, but that seems a little subjective. Morgan says her next call is to the school board and she’s not retiring Aubrie’s leggings just yet. She says the girl wore them to summer school last week without an issue.
