Administration Proposes Vetting Those Who Get Food Stamps

Activists Protest House Farm Bill Plan To Cut Food Assistance Program

The Trump administration is about to propose a rule change that would drop more than three-million Americans from the food stamp program.

The administration says the change it will propose today would cut about two and-a-half billion dollars a year in federal spending. The rule change would affect 43 states where people who receive benefits from the Temporary Assistance For Needy Families automatically become eligible for food stamps. The change would require people who get TANF [[ TAN-eff ]] benefits to have their income and assets reviewed to determine if they're eligible for food stamps.

“Some states are taking advantage of loopholes that allow people to receive the SNAP benefits who would otherwise not qualify and for which they are not entitled,” explained USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue. Currently, rules allow those that otherwise wouldn’t be eligible to access SNAP benefits for two years before being vetted.
