Woman outraged by sign 'greeting' people in community center

A community center in Canada is under fire for displaying a message some say is fat-shaming on a sign used to greet people as they drive into the area.JessicaBaudin-Griffin called out the Leefield Community League in Edmonton on Facebook for its “inappropriate” message, which reads: “Tired of being fat and ugly? Hit the gym and just be ugly!”

Community Leagues are made up of locals “who come together to create recreational, educational and social opportunities” for residents and are supposed to be welcoming and inclusive, which the sign is not. In her post, Griffin says the sign isn’t funny and worse - perpetuates a negative message to kids. “This kind of messaging only perpetuates body shaming culture,” she explains. “Our words and language MATTER! Children learn through what we model.”

Leefield Community League president Wil Tonowski says the sign wasn’t intended to hurt anyone and he’s upset anyone saw it as anything other than a joke. He says they would “never intentionally want to hurt, ‘offend’ or ‘fat-shame’ anyone.” Even though the message has now been taken down, the issue is being looked into by the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues and their executive director agrees the message “was not welcoming and inclusive to all community members.”
