Trump Spoke With NRA Chief Executive About More Background Checks

Obama Seeks To Tighten Loopholes In Gun Purchasing Regulations

There are reports President Trump spoke on the phone with National Rifle Association head Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday.

The call took place just days after two mass shootings that left 31 dead. It's not clear who called who but LaPierre reportedly told Trump that endorsing tougher background checks wouldn't be popular with his base. The President said Wednesday, appeared to dismiss that notion and said that there is an "appetite" for such checks, especially in the aftermath of the massacres in Texas and Ohio.

Senator Joe Manchin told “The Wall Street Journal” that if Trump supports the background check bill it’s a game changer since Republicans who previously wouldn’t vote for it, would have to.
