Beer festival bans drinks with ‘sexist’ names to attract more women

A popular beer festival in the U.K. is trying to encourage more female beer drinkers, so they’re banning sexist beer names from their event. The Great British Beer Festival is happening this weekend and you won’t find any merchandise there that disparages women with sexist names or shows “inappropriate designs of women” on the beer labels.

The fest will have a range of around 1,000 beers, ciders and perries - a hard cider made from pears - but some of the beers you won’t find there thanks to the event’s organizers at the Campaign for Real Ale include Dizzy Blonde, Leg-Spreader, and Slack Alice, which is described as “a little tart.”

Festival organizers say they opted for the ban after a survey revealed 68% of women said they wouldn’t buy beer that appeared to be sexist. So the hope here is to “overcome outdated stereotypes” and appeal to more female drinkers. As organizer Abigail Newton explains, “It’s hard to understand why some brewers would actively choose to alienate the vast majority of their potential customers with material likely to appeal to a tiny and shrinking percentage.”
