House Dems Push Senate To Pass Bill Expanding Background Checks

House Democrats Call On Republicans To Take Action On Zika Funding Bill

Democrats are pushing the Senate to pass a bipartisan House bill expanding gun background checks. During an event at the Capitol, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer noted the recent deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California.

He was joined by Virginia Democrat Don Beyer, who said 100 people die from gun violence in the U.S. every day (which isn’t exactly true). To review, the Democratic-led House passed the background checks bill several months ago, but it has yet to come up for a vote in the Senate. That’s something Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will change when Congress is back in session.

For his part,President Trump is supporting "meaningful background checks" and thinks McConnell wants that too.Talking with reporters in New Jersey, Trump noted that he is a strong supporter of the 2ndAmendment but, said he doesn't want guns in the hands of a "lunatic or a maniac."
