in #CASE you missed it… National Green Bean Casserole Day

December 3rd National Green Bean Casserole Day! Sure, you can have it any time of year, but this dish is a true holiday classic. Not a veggie lover? No worries. Even those who can’t choke down a single green bean seem to chow down on green bean casserole.

The green bean casserole was first created by the Campbell Soup Company in 1955. The inspiration? “To create a quick and easy recipe around two things most Americans always had on hand in the 1950s: green beans and Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup.” Fast forward to 1972 and the “Good Housekeeping Cookbook” recipe replaced the cream of mushroom soup with sour cream. Yeah, that didn’t last long – and the old standard returned!

Never had the pleasure? Take two cans of green beans, drained (the French style green beans are best, but cut green beans will work fine, too)…mix with one can of cream of mushroom soup (golden mushroom is especially nice)…half a can or so of milk…some salt and pepper…and you’re almost there.

THIS is when you add in the best part: FRENCH FRIED ONIONS! Mix em in, add more around the edge of your baking/serving dish – and after blazing at 350-degrees until it’s golden and bubbly (about 25/30 minutes), NOW you will be the hero of your dinner – holiday or every day.
