in #CASE you missed it… Third Graders Start “Lockdown News”
Some third-graders from California have come up with a fun way to keep learning and stay connected while schools are closed. A group of students from Glorietta Elementary School in Orinda have started a newspaper called “Third Grade Lockdown News.” The idea came from Lucy Poree after she read a book about a mouse newspaper and thought her friends could give it a try.
Lucy and 14 other student reporters now meet every few days on Zoom to talk about story ideas, the same way reporters across the country are meeting with their colleagues. They’ve had five issues so far and have covered stories including “Fun facts about toilet paper” and “How to avoid the boredom blues.”
The kids are having fun while working on their writing and keeping in touch while they’re out of school. The newspaper’s next issue will feature its very first “advertisement” from a small business started by another group of kids in their neighborhood that offers personalized sidewalk chalk art and messages for birthdays, graduation, and holidays. Lucy and the other reporters say they’re having so much fun, they want to keep the paper going even after lockdown ends.
