Meryl Epstein and Mike Simmons had originally planned to get married in New York City in the later part of 2020, but during a vacation in the Florida Keys just as things were getting bad with the coronavirus, they decided to go a whole different direction with their affair.
Their original wedding was going to be low-key and untraditional with no more than 70 guests due to the high costs of a Big Apple wedding. Instead, they decided to use their wedding money to extend their Florida Keys rental and self-isolate there. They thought about eloping, but really wanted their friends and family to be involved, so they instead opted for a Zoom wedding.
That’s right the couple made it official this past weekend with a virtual wedding with 150 guests from 22 different time zones. And they did more than just say “I Do” in front of a computer. The affair had a dress code, with all guests asked to wear white, and there was even assigned “seating,” with guests put in Zoom’s breakout rooms named after places in New York.
In addition, there was cake, speeches, rehearsals and they’ve even had a "social distancing photo session.” The couple even made arrangements for live music, including a pianist who performed as Epstein walked down the aisle, a vocalist for the first dance, and a DJ for the party. The whole thing cost them about $2,000, mainly for equipment to ensure great lighting and sound.
And for gifts, the couple asked friends to donate to City Harvest, to help feed New Yorkers in need.
