Things To Do To Do If You’re Suffering From “Maskne”

These days most of us are wearing facemasks on a daily basis, and while they may keep us safe, they aren’t always comfortable, and for some it’s even causing them to breakout in what is now being called “Maskne.”

“Maskne” is acne that pops up around the areas of your face covered by protective masks, and dermatologist Dr. Samer Jaber tells Fox News it’s likely caused by the “moist, humid environment” in the mask “as it traps your breath, skin oils and sweat, leading to irritation, rashes and acne.” It can also happen simply because the mask has contact with your face for long periods of time.

So, what can you do about it? Well, Dr. Jaber has some simple suggestions that may help. They include:

  • If it’s safe to do so, take your mask off when you can to let your face breathe.
  • Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser that’s good for your skin type.
  • Use moisturizer in the areas of your skin irritated by the mask.
  • Make sure you let your mask dry out after each wear.
  • Wash your facemasks regularly “to remove the oils and sweat trapped in it.”
  • If your Maskne is very bad, try not wearing makeup under your mask.
  • If you’ve already developed some breakouts, Dr. Jaber says to do a “spot treatment” with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid, or use hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation, although he warms that some of these treatments can make things worse. You can also see a dermatologist virtually who may be able to help.
