It’s called EndeavorRx and it can now be prescribed to kids between eight and 12 with certain types of ADHD.
The FDA has given the green light for the first video game-based treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. The video game, called EndeavorRx, can now be prescribed to kids between eight and 12 who have certain types of ADHD. But it doesn’t mean the youngsters can be glued to a screen all day, the digital remedy is part of a program of treatments, including therapy, medication and educational programs.
“The EndeavorRx device offers a non-drug option for improving symptoms associated with ADHD in children,” explains Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. The game is billed as a “first-of-its kind attention treatment for children with ADHD... delivered through a captivating video game experience.”
Around four-million children between six and 11 are affected by ADHD, a common neurodevelopmental disorder that includes symptoms of having trouble staying focused and paying attention and difficulty controlling behavior. The game was authorized for treatment after the FDA reviewed five clinical studies on over 600 kids. EndeavorRx can be downloaded as an app on a mobile device.
