in #CASE you missed it… 5th Grader Petitions To Rename School After RBG

A little girl in Oregon has started a petition to rename Kellogg Middle School to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

A fifth-grader in Oregon wants her middle school to be renamed after Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ruby, a student at Kellogg Middle School, started a Change.org petition with help from her parents to get the name changed to honor the late Supreme Court justice who passed away earlier this month.

In her letter, Ruby calls on school district officials to consider her suggestion because she feels the new school should have a new name. “We have a lot of schools (far too many, in my opinion) named after white businessmen,” she explains. “If kids go to schools centered only on white males, then kids who are not those two things may feel unimportant, or worthless even,” Ruby writes. “I trust that you do not want kids to feel this way, so I hope you will take my ideas into consideration.”

And her petition is getting a lot of support, so far it has more than 19-hundred signatures. Portland Public Schools has not commented on the petition yet, but has said they are “very committed to student voice and the renaming process,” so it sounds like they’re open to ideas.
