TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: “Gown Gals” Create Colorful PPE

A group of women from Hendersonville First United Methodist Church in North Carolina have found a way to use their skills to support essential workers. They call themselves the Gown Gals and they’re hard at work at their sewing machines turning bed sheets into colorful personal protective equipment for staff at local long-term healthcare facilities.

A few months ago, the Gals started collecting donations of cash and bedding and they’ve been putting them to good use. So far, they’ve made 150 gowns and each one takes about two hours to make. Jane Johnson, one of the Gals, says it’s “so rewarding” to know they’re helping and it gives them a sense of purpose.

“There’s so much that we have no control over in this time,” says member Carol Watson. “It’s a way that we can feel like we’re contributing."
