in #CASE you missed it... Can You Be Fired Over An Old Post Online?

It’s no secret that companies check up on what people are doing on social media, and no matter how much you try to get rid of stupid things you posted in the past they may come back to haunt you.

Well, that’s the worry of one writer who asked for advice after being fired for an old, but inappropirate tweet They explained to “Go to Greg” to that they wrote the tweet “many years ago” and has since taken the post down, but “an enemy” saved it and is now circulating it. After their employer found out they were fired. They admit they were “young and stupid” and wonder if their “sacking” was justified.

Sadly, Greg says that yes their firing was probably completely legal. While he doesn’t exactly know how bad the tweet was, Greg notes that “most employment is ‘at will’,” which means companies can fire you for any reason, except reasons protected by law like age, race, gender etc.

Greg does note that “gotcha” or “cancel culture” is troubling, and most people probably have something “cringeworthy” in their past. “I think generally we need to be more forgiving of youthful indiscretions that previously went unrecorded for posterity before social media,” he writes, but adds that if someone posts something stupid today, “I don’t have much sympathy for you if your employer takes action.”
