A Seventh Grader Creates Ventilator Using Legos

A tween in Illinois saw a problem in the world and combined two of his passions to try to come up with a solution.Anthony Hartman has created a ventilator out of Legos in an effort to help with ventilator shortages. The seventh-grader from Winnetka, Illinois, used his free time during the pandemic to put his love of creating and building to work after hearing about the shortage of ventilators for COVID patients.

Hartman used Legos and materials from home to create his design and he’s named it the EVentilator2020. “I saw a bunch of universities making respirator units that were cheaper and more affordable,” the 12-year-old explains. “I wanted to make my own version with a twist, which was the Lego part.”

He even entered his creation into the Kids Think Tank contest and while he didn’t take home a prize, he was still recognized for his idea. Hartman says he’s going to submit his idea for the EVentilator2020 to Lego in hopes of getting his ventilators to rural medical professionals who need the equipment.
