Mom Finds Kidney Donor In Stranger On Social Media

A Kansas woman in desperate need of a kidney donor found one in a stranger from South Carolina, thanks to the power of social media.Kim Shufelberger was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2006 and by 2020, it had reached stage four. She had been on the transplant list, but says the chances of finding a living donor “seemed impossible” since the odds of having a sibling match are only 25%.

But as her health declined, Kim’s friend posted a plea for a donor on Facebook. And across the country, Brittany Clark in South Carolina happened to see it by chance. She says she was inspired to help because like Kim, she’s also a single mom and a teacher. So she got tested and was found to be a perfect match!

The women were complete strangers, but instantly bonded over their similar backgrounds. Brittany even drove 15 hours to meet Kim face-to-face for the first time. They had a successful transplant surgery and have both since recovered. Now Kim is feeling much better and the women talk nearly every day, refer to each other as “sisters” and say they’re grateful for their “amazing connection.”
