Group Of Garbage Men Find $25K Accidentally Tossed By Family

Have you ever thrown something valuable away by mistake? It happened to one family in Ohio, who didn’t realize they’d tossed $25-thousand in cash until the garbage truck came to get their trash. But they were able to reach out to officials with Republic Services and get their money back.

Operations Supervisor Gary Capan says the family explained that they were cleaning out the house for their grandmother, including throwing away everything in the fridge and freezer. When the grandma told them there was an envelope with $25-thousand in it, it was too late and the trash had been picked up.

But the garbage company was able to contact the driver before he reached the landfill and diverted him to a recycling facility in Oberlin instead. Workers there were able to go through the contents of his vehicle and operations manager Dan Schoewe says it only took about 10 minutes of searching to find the cash. “It can be very, very difficult,” he explains. “It’s rare that we can find something for somebody. So this is like the biggest one I’ve seen in 30 years.”
