How To Ease Back-To-School Jitters

After a long summer vacation and getting to stay up late, getting back into a school routine can be challenging. And for kids who haven’t stepped foot inside a school building since March 2020? They may be feeling more nervous to start school this year. The state of the world and the never-ending mask debate may only add to their anxieties, but these are some ways to calm your kids’ jitters before their first day back at school.

  • Help them feel familiar- A big reason kids feel nervous is that it’s a change and a new environment, so fostering a sense of familiarity can help. Talk to them about what they can expect at school and show them around campus before school starts, if you can.
  • Stay positive- Keep reminding them about the things they’ll like and appreciate about going to school.
  • Remind them they’re not alone- Knowing other kids are just as nervous as they are could do a lot to ease their worries.
  • Watch yourself- Kids pick up on your emotions and they’re constantly watching us for cues on how they should be feeling. If you’re anxious about your student getting sick or wearing a mask at school, they’ll notice, so keep yourself in check.
  • Prepare- In the week leading up to school, ease back into the school routine by sending kids to bed earlier and waking them up earlier. Get little kids used to opening containers their lunches will come in so they know how to do it on day one. Introduce these changes now so the first day won’t feel as overwhelming.
  • Teach calming techniques- Show your child how calming strategies, like deep breathing and meditation, help ease symptoms of anxiety so they know how to self-soothe if it happens to them.
  • Listen- Talk to your kid and really listen to their fears and worries. When they feel like they’re being listened to, they may feel more understood and calmer. Plus, if you know specific things they’re nervous about, you can work on a plan to help.
  • Make it fun- Let them help pick out school supplies and clothes to get them more excited about it. Having some of their favorites in their lunchbox can also make the return to school more fun.
