Why We Put Background Noise On To Fall Asleep

Many people use the TV or a podcast to fall asleep. psychologist Dr. Maryhan explains “It’s not as uncommon as you might think. If you’re anxious, then you’ll often find that your mind goes into overdrive [when trying to sleep]. It can feel completely overwhelming and having something on to distract your mind from that can help some people.”

The Sleep Foundation confirms anxiety is an issue in their article “Mental Health and Sleep.” It says “Anxiety disorders have a strong association with sleeping problems.”

Experts say if you can't shut your brain down at night, you can find a comforting sound to help you fall asleep, but avoid any sudden loud noises that will wake you back up.
