A Woman’s In Command Of Navy Aircraft Carrier For First Time

A U.S. Navy officer is making history with her new position. Captain Amy Bauernschmidt is now the commanding officer of the USS Abraham Lincoln, making her the first woman to lead a nuclear carrier in U.S. Naval history.

And it’s not the captain’s first time making history. Bauernschmidt was also the first woman to become Executive Officer, the number two position, on a carrier. She previously served in that role on the Lincoln from 2016 to 2019. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994, which was the first graduating class where women were allowed to serve on combatant ships and aircraft. After that, she became a helicopter pilot and went on to serve in helicopter squadrons, including as the commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70.

“There is no more humbling sense of responsibility,” says Bauernschmidt. “Than to know you are entrusted with the care of the people who have chosen to protect our nation.”
