Detective Donates Kidney To Save Fellow Officer’s Life

A detective in Washington state didn’t hesitate to help a colleague in need of a kidney transplant. Detectives Damon Hewin and Jon Postawa had worked together at the Auburn Police Department for over seven years, but didn’t know each other well. And Hewin kept his longtime kidney illness quiet and didn’t talk about needing a transplant at work.

Thankfully, the Donor Outreach for Veterans program stepped in to launch a search for a donor for Hewin, an Army vet, and Postawa immediately volunteered to be tested. “It was a no-brainer for me,” Postawa says.

He delivered the good news to Hewin and his family himself and it was an emotional moment. “You got to see the happy tears from my wife, the joy in my kids’ eyes,” Hewin says.

The men had a successful transplant this summer and now that they share this bond, they’ve become close friends. “Obviously, I’m beyond thankful,” Hewin says.
