GOOD NEWS: Bus Rider Fights Off Attacker Who Hit Elderly Man With Cane

A good Samaritan who intervened in an attack on an elderly man in the Chinatown neighborhood of Oakland, California, is being recognized as a hero by the community. Video of the incident from April, shows a man yelling and striking 69-year-old Hua Lin in the face with a cane. The good Samaritan, who —out of fear for her safety— only wants to be identified as Mychelle can be heard screaming, "Oh my GOD are you okay!?" She then steps between the attacker and Lin, shielding him from further violence.

"I wouldn't sit there and watch anyone get hurt," says Mychelle in aninterview with Bay Area News7. After shielding Lin, Mychelle takes a picture of the perpetrator and then chases him off the bus. A few seconds later, the man can be seen stepping back on the bus and hitting her multiple times with the cane before finally leaving the scene. Because of Mychelle's quick actions, Lin was spared from any more injury and police were able to make an arrest.

"She is not only courageous but someone with integrity," says Carl Chan, president of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, who reached out to Mychelle after learning of her good deed. He has started aGoFundMeto show gratitude and help her stay safe as she has experienced several incidents of harassment and threats since the encounter. “I hope many of us will step up in recognizing our bus hero," says Chan.
