Fatal ‘zombie’ deer disease could spread to humans

A disease that turns deer into zombies is affecting deer all over the midwest, could spread to humans. According to the Daily Mail, the illness called chronic wasting disease is spreading across North America and the midwest, attacking the brain, spinal cord, and other parts of deer, elk, and moose. The CDC says it's been reported in at least 24 states - and spreading plus two Canadian provinces as of January.

The disease leads to death, but first causes dramatic weight loss in the animal, strips coordination, and makes the animal become aggressive. It was thought not to affect humans but things have changed. Experts from the University of Minnesota stressed at a hearing Thursday that the disease should be treated as a public health issue. “It is probable that human cases of CWD associated with the consumption of contaminated meat will be documented in the years ahead,” they said.
