There were no fancy machines at that time.... I remember making a purchase and having to deal with this.. Remember how to use it? You lay the card in its space, then put your 2 or 3 part cc invoice on top, slide the handle across. The paper showed the cc number. Then fill in info, ask customer,"would you like to have your carbons?" Which they tore up in front of you. 2 copies for you, 1 copy for the customer. I know, it seems complicated, but in the 70's and 80's we managed to deal with it... :)
