White House Urged ICE To Release Detainees Onto Streets Of Sanctuary Cities

Was President Trump about to play chicken with sanctuary cities? Maybe. According to a new report from the “Washington Post,” the Trump Administration twice urged American immigration officials to release detainees onto the streets of sanctuary cities as retaliation to the President's political adversaries.

“The Post” says that the Trump Administration called for the action in November as a migrant caravan was approaching the U.S. border. It did so again in February during a partial government shutdown. And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's district in San Francisco was specifically mentioned as a target.

What stopped it? ICE's legal department rejected the idea as inappropriate. As for where “The Post” got its information, reporters say the report was based on email messages it reviewed and talking to Department of Homeland Security officials. What does the White House say? Both the White House and the Department of Homeland Security suggest that the proposal was no longer being considered, while the White House released a statement saying that the proposal “was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected.”
