Not Cool. Woman Cuts Off Friend Who Stole Her Baby Name

Deciding on a name for your baby is definitely a personal thing, and while nobody “owns” a baby name, it certainly hurts when somebody uses the one you want, and in this case, it ended a friendship.

A woman shares on Reddit that she always knew the unique name she wanted to give any son she would have because it was her dad’s name. She shared this with a best friend, who she had been close to for five years from the ages of 18 to 24, but she would live to regret that.

Well, at 24 that friend got pregnant, and the OP says she was as supportive as she could be for the friend, making herself available to her for anything she needed. When discussing baby names, the friend said she had one in mind but wasn’t revealing it, which the OP totally understood.

Cut to a week later, the friend has the baby and announces the name on Facebook, and yup, you guessed it, it was the same name the OP wanted to name her son. The OP realized the friend wouldn’t tell her the name because she knew she’d object, and the OP hasn’t talked to the friend since, even though it’s been four years and the friend tried to reach out to her.

  • So, who is right in this situation? Well, the Internet has mixed feelings with many supporting the woman’s decision to cut out the friend.
  • “The name has special meaning to you, and she took it without mentioning it in the hopes that you wouldn’t kick up a stink once the baby was born,” one person noted.
  • Others think she went a bit too far cutting the friend out entirely over a name. “And you can’t now have it because...?,” one person asked, adding, “just because she likes the name it doesn’t negate your connection to it… cutting a friend off entirely seems a little harsh imo.”
  • Another commenter suggested both were in the wrong. "She sucks because she knew you wanted that name and purposely kept it from you because she knew you’d be against it,” the person shared. “You suck because you gave up what seems to be a great friendship.”
