New research shows moms are doing more childcare and homeschooling than dads during lockdown.
Everyone’s still adjusting to the way our lives have changed under lockdown and that includes caring for the kids while we’re working from home. Working moms have typically handled more childcare than dads, even when they’re the breadwinner, but now it seems the coronavirus pandemic is making it worse. According to new research, moms are spending about two hours a day more than dads on childcare these days.
Economists from the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and Zurich interviewed families in April and found that both employed and unemployed mothers spend an average of six hours a day on childcare and homeschooling, while fathers are clocking around four hours. The survey shows moms are doing at least 50% more childcare and spending between 10 and 30% more time homeschooling than dads.
And this gender-divide is even greater with high-earning moms. Dr. Christopher Rauh, an economist at Cambridge University, explains, “The higher the household income, the more time women are spending with homeschooling compared to men.” The survey shows moms who earn just under $100-thousand a year report doing 3.3-hours of homeschooling and 3.8-hours of childcare a day, while dads who earn the same amount report spending 2.1 and 2.3 hours on the same tasks.
