TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: Goalies Raise Money For Cancer Research
Ice hockey goalies from the U.S. and Canada are raising money for cancer research by playing the game they love. They’re counting the number of saves they make for the October Saves Goalie Challenge. The community-based charity event started in 2014 to raise money for pediatric and breast cancer research by goalies getting pledges for donations for every save they make.
Lara Hopewell, executive director of October Saves, explains that the event started seven years ago with ice hockey goalies getting support from loved ones and friends and they’ve raised more than $1.5-million total. They’re also off to a great start for 2020, with more than $100-thousand raised so far.
“I have some family struggling with cancer and I also know with COVID going on, I couldn’t imagine struggling with cancer through all this,” says Chris Dunn, one of the goalies raising money for the first time this year. “So if I can find any way to bring some positivity back into the community, I’ll do it.”
