Marriage Advice We Can Learn From TikTok

TikTok is full of life hacks and advice on everything from cooking to finances, but we know better than to believe things like the best way to cook a steak is in the toaster. But it turns out, TikTok can actually be a solid source of advice for couples. These are a few accounts known for dishing some secrets to relationship bliss.

  • Ask yourself the “first date” question- The marriage and relationship experts at@couplessuccesssuggest this little gem to gauge the state of your union. At the end of your day together, ask yourself what they call the “first date” question: “If today was our first date, would I be invited back on a second date?” If the answer is yes, it was a good day. If it’s a no, then it’s a good time to check your behavior.
  • Flip the script to avoid the “where are we going to eat?” issue- Lots of couples struggle over deciding on a restaurant choice together, but TikTokers@JamesandAmandahave an easy fix. Instead of asking “Where do you want to have dinner?” this couple suggests asking, “Guess where I’m taking you?” And then you take your partner to the first place they guess, eliminating all that back and forth of choosing a restaurant.
  • Take time to process your response in a fight- Setting boundaries is the key to relationship success, according to life coach@shefasjourney. She explains that when couples have a squabble, it’s perfectly fine for a partner to acknowledge what happened, then ask for space to think through their reaction and next steps. All you need to say is something like, “I’m very upset about this right now, so I need time to process what just happened.”
  • Be intentional about daily romance- TikTokers@harveyeveraftersuggest kicking off each month by writing down new ways to show love to your person. Then cut up the list and stick the slips of paper in a jar and every morning, each partner pulls one out and does that thing. The gestures can be as simple as dressing up for dinner in the living room or putting your phone away when you get home from work.
