Mom Creates Jewelry Line Made From Breast Milk

Like a lot of people,Alison Hawthorn was looking for a way to pass the time during quarantine, so she turned to a new hobby. The mom of four from England says she needed something to keep her busy, beyond the challenges of parenting during a pandemic. “I felt like I was losing my mind, I was going crazy,” she explains, adding that the endless diapers were getting to her and she needed to do something for herself.

So she did what any bored parent would do - she started making jewelry out of breast milk. Hawthorn was already breastfeeding her twins and got the idea after experimenting with making jewelry using resin. She did her research and practiced the craft, first making things for herself, family and friends. But then word got out and now she’s expanded and now women send her their breast milk, which she turns into necklaces, rings, earrings and pendants for them.

  • To make the pieces, Hawthorn uses just about a third of an ounce of milk, then heats it through a double boiling method.
  • After that, she adds preservation powder and leaves it out to dry.
  • Once it’s dry, she grinds it into a powder that’s used in the jewelry.
  • Hawthorn already has plans to expand her business, she hopes to add umbilical cords to her collection in the future.
