Things You Should Never Say To A Child

Parenting expert Kirsty Ketley says parents should be mindful of what they say, as the effects may not be seen on the surface, but could do lasting harm to a child. The biggest thing to remember is not to invalidate a kiddo’s feelings or thoughts.

These phrases are the ones Ketley says must never be used:

• Don’t be silly
• You’re stupid
• Big boys and girls don’t cry. This one is super damaging
• Give (family member) a kiss (or hug). Let the child decide.
• You’re a little chubby. No comment to a child on their weight should ever be used
