A Quarter Of Americans Don’t Think They’ll Be Able To Retire Comfortably

A lot of us dream of the day we can finally say goodbye to the office and live out our later years in happy retirement. But while that may sound great, it turns out a lot of folks don’t really see that day ever happening.

A new YouGov poll finds:

  • 27% of Americans don’t think they will ever save enough money to retire comfortably.
  • And it’s even worse for Gen X, where 37% don’t think they’ll ever save enough to retire.
  • As for other generations:
    • 16% of Gen Z don’t think they’ll be able to afford retirement.
    • 27% of Millennials don’t expect to be able to afford it.
    • 23% of Baby Boomers doubt they’ll be able to retire comfortably.

This uncertainty is particularly common among folks who work in retail, with 38% saying they don’t think they’ll be able to retire comfortably.

  • Other occupations with concerns include:
    • Medical and health services (34%)
    • Hospitality and leisure (33%)
    • Transportation and distribution (28%)

As for folks who do expect to be able to retire comfortably, when do they expect that can happen?

  • Well, the most common answer is between 60 and 65 (20%), followed by:
    • Before the age of 60 (9%)
    • Between 66 and 70 (9%)
    • Over 70 (4%)

Meanwhile, 14% have no idea when they think they’ll be able to retire, while 17% of those polled are already retired.
