Dump Truck Crashes Into Cars, People & a Subway in Pioneer Square

An out of control dump truck careened down streets in Seattle today, crashing into cars, people and into a Subway restaurant at 40mph.

The accident happened along James Street, between 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue around 9:50am. The dump truck reportedly hit several cars and a pedestrian.

A total of five people at the scene were injured, including four with serious injuries. All of them were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The Subway was evacuated, as well as the entire building that surrounds it.

An investigation found that truck suffered a "catastrophic mechanical failure." Once it started rolling down the hill, it hit a pedestrian and picked up speed. The driver tried to avoid cars, but struck three vehicles before crashing into the Subway sandwich shop. A worker inside the store was injured.
